What we’re seeing at Independence Park is shameful.
It’s starting to look like the jails. Hundreds of men inside of a fenced yard.
Kids are being pushed away from using the park. In the baseball and soccer fields also in the open space. Heard stories that adults are pushing them out the fields by the ears so they can take over.
Why not eliminate the volleyball nets and build a skateboard space for the kids. I know of a few kids that got ran over by cars because the only spaces they have to do tricks on boards are the streets.
Parks are mainly for kids and senior citizens. Let’s take care of our community so we can call in families instead of pushing them away to other towns.
Where’s our local government on looking for citizens needs.
Enough talking more action.
Do not wait for citizen demands, act on your own and let’s see your program when running for office.
I am a newark resident and it”s true Independence park is shameful .theres no place for kids to play, theres volleyball nets all around that free spaces in the park and most of that people dont leave in the ironbound.where is that money we pay to tha city of newark?we need police in that park to protect this kids .becouse kids are a fraid to go to that park.we need tha politics to get envolve that”s there job.
To whom may concern:
My name is Sonia Salgado. I am a parent of two children, one of them currently attending Wilson Avenue School in Newark, NJ. As I was trying to do the registration of my second child to enter the same school for Kindergarten level today, May 1st I was told that the school was not going to have a place for her. With me, around 50 parents heard the same answer. It is sad for a parent that is mostly concern in trying to give their children a better education, having to come to this point of realizing that for one whole year, my child is going to stay behind.
When I questioned the superiors of Wilson Ave. about the reasons why there was only 10 to 16 children that were going to be able to attend Kindergarten, the answer was that the school has not enough capacity for so many children. The choice that was given was to try other schools around, but still with the risk of not accepting them, according to their address (the child wouldn’t belong to that school) and because they were having the same problem in those areas. Even if that would happen, I would still have the problem of having to pick up two children at the same time but different locations.
I ask now, as I am aware of the “No Children Left Behind” program, if there will be any solution for our children, as well as if there is maybe another solution that we are not aware of.
I repeat, one more time, that my main concern is having my child educated and ready to enter the 1st grade level without having to skip any school year. If there is ANY solution or even a remote possibility of one, I would very much appreciate if you would let me know.
Sincerely,
Sonia Salgado
Ms. Salgagdo,
Since the NJ education laws limited the number of students that can be in Kindergarten classes, space is a problem in some of the more overcrowded schools after the available classrooms are filled. Any of the “DownNeck” schools– South, Oliver, Lafayette, Ann, or Hawkins which is closest to Wilson Ave–should take you child under these circumstances if they also have space.
Contact the regional administrative office–called School Leadership Team I–under the direction of Ms. Joanne Bergamotto for information and procedures. You may also want to speak to Ms. Elaine Neves the parent liason at the SLT I Office. All phone numbers and address are available at the Newark Public School Website.

I am a substitute teacher in Newark, NJ for the past 2 1/2 years. One of the ongoing problems in Newark schools has been the use of the Internet. As a substitute teacher, it is very difficult to control in most schools. Some schools, such as Oliver Street, are closely monitored and it is not a problem. However, in many schools, such sites as MySpace and other social networking sites, are a constant encroachment on the education of children.
There is one technology teacher who warns children of the dangers of online frienships, as well as murders that have resulted from online contacts on such sites.
However, in most schools, grade school, middle and high school, there is little in the way of controls on the Internet. Pornography, such as lesbian videos are available on the Internet in middle schools, on such sites as YouTube, and young children in Grade Schools watch obscene videos on the Internet in grade schools in the Ironbound and other parts of Newark.
There are school districts, who, within 2 weeks of learning of these type of problems, have responded promptly so that 97% of what filters through on school computers is educational.
Newark school district has been very slow to respond to any such efforts, though efforts through phone, letter and email have been made over the past 2 years.
Also, video games of extreme violence are played on school computers in both libraries and classroom computers, during and after school hours.
It is hoped sincerely, for the protection of children and youths, as well as the hope that Newark children will recieve a more fair chance at a high quality educaiton, that the new school board can take positive measures, in both educating parents, as well as keeping a stricter control through filtering systems, of the ongoing Internet problem in Newark Public Schools.
Other schools systems have addressed the issue, why not Newark?
One of the reasons there are no vacancies in the Ironbound is the number of students, at all levels, frequenting our schools while living in other towns (specially Hillside) or in other areas of Newark. Ann Street School is a favorite with “out of towners”, but Lafayette and Wilson also have their share.
This is a major problem. We see our taxes go up and have no vacancies in our schools.
Can we have have the new members of the Advisory Board take a look at this situation? Or is it going to be business as usual?
Let’s hope so.
