Yesterday, our dear East Ward Councilman Augusto Amador, “a long-time ally of [Sharpe] James who broke with him and joined the opposition in more recent years,” was called to the stand at James’ trial. Here are some of the things Amador had to say, as reported by the Star Ledger:
“James’ defense attorneys have argued the former mayor could not have rigged city land deals for Riley because the council had ultimate control over the deals. Under questioning by prosecutors, Amador, who voted to approve at least one of Riley’s contracts, said council members do not closely evaluate applications by developers.“

“The screening process is done before it comes to us,” Amador said. “Very, very rarely do we as council persons go into these packages in detail. We believe that information received by us for a vote is correct.“
