Candidate Spotlight: Eliana Pintor

According to the Portuguese newspaper Luso Americano there are two Ironbound residents running for the Newark Public Schools Advisory Board. The election is going to take place on Tuesday, April 15th. According to other sources there is only one Ironbound resident running (one of the “residents” doesn’t actually reside in the Ironbound). How much property must one own to be considered a “resident” of a particular city? That’s another question for another day.

The Gotthart Street resident Eliana Pintor is a graduate of St. John’s University - Class of ‘03. Pintor served as a graduate assistant in the Executive Vice President’s office on the Staten Island campus. She Mastered in Economics, Public Administration, and Public Relations with a concentration in International Relations, according to the paper. Is this one degree or several? Geesh! (Note: I found several mistakes in this newspaper article) She was also a member of the Sigma Alpha Chi sorority.

Pintor says she will fight for a quality education and new school facilities in the city of Newark and especially in the much needed Ironbound.

Eliana Pintor was born in Newark to Artur and Maria Pintor, natives of Branca, Albergaria-a-Nova, Portugal. She is 27 years old and currently working for Votorantim Bank Securities Inc., a financial company in New York.

She has been linked to various local political campaigns such as those of the mayor Cory Booker, East Ward councilman Augusto Amador and the District 29 trio Grace Spencer, Teresa Ruiz and Ironbound hero: Alberto ‘Al’ Coutinho.

The other candidates are James Bennet II, Barbara King, Tynesha McHarris, Abril Arelis Romero, Barbara Todish, Alite Thompson, Leonard Wheeler and Peter Pantoliano. As well as long-time Newark resident, activist and poet, Richard Cammarieri who is seeking a third term. As an elected member of the Newark Public Schools Advisory Board, he is currently chairing the Facilities Committee and has served on the Finance and Curriculum Committees. In addition, Mr. Cammarieri is on the Search Committee for the new Superintendent.

I was raised in Newark and I went to Newark Public Schools and all i’m going to say is that, if he was running for Iron Chef of America maybe he’d have a chance, but unless they’re looking for a cook for schools then I still don’t see what he can do for our schools.

Don’t let our community be left behind again because of foolish arguments that divert attention away from making an informed choice among the candidates! The priority is first knowing what quality education is about and then helping the educators at Oliver, Ann, Lafayette, South, Hawkins, Wilson and East Side make the schools more effective! It really shouldn’t be about who gets jobs and contracts with the Board. These candidates all might have the best of intentions but what matters what they know, and believe and are willing to fight for to prepare our students to compete with the kids from the suburbs for the best jobs and acceptance at the best colleges. What have they actually done over the past few years to help teachers, students and parents make our schools a better place to learn??? How do they plan to help the schools get access to technology, help the staff reduce student dropout rates, enforce and improve discipline??? What will they do with their vote on the Board to provide better services for students with special needs and recent arrivals that need to learn English and at the same time try to learn all the skills and knowledge they need in literacy, math and science (two large groups in our city that the charter schools in Newark have never enrolled)??? Hear and find out for yourself… at the CANDIDATES FORUM TUESDAY APRIL 1, BETHANY BAPTIST CHURCH Only a short distance from DownNeck at 275 Market Street.
