Volunteers make effort to revitalize Liberty Park

This morning,  Saturday, September 13, at 9:00 am, a group of volunteers will participate in the reconstruction of Liberty Park, located at the corner of Chestnut and Hennessey Streets, in the heart of the Ironbound. The event will be made up of students from East Side High School, Ironbound residents, members of the Ironbound Community Corporation and employees of the following companies: Weston Solutions, The Environmental Quality Company, The Pudding Stone Group, The RBA Group, The Sherwin Williams Company and TestAmerica, Inc.

This project was prepared and coordinated by Councilman Augusto Amador and with the support of Mayor Cory Booker - both are scheduled to be present to the occasion.

Volunteers will pickup garbage, pressure-wash the pavement, restore the brick walls that surround the park, plant grass and trees, replace swings, paint walls and gates and clean the sand. Those interested in volunteering can meet at the park at 9:00am.

Both events will begin promptly at 7:30pm.

According to the media the City of Newark will be closing its two indoor pools for maintenance and cleaning. The Ironbound pool will be closed through September 21, re-opening on the 22nd while the John F. Kennedy pool will close on September 22, re-open on October 13.

Workers from the Division of Public Buildings will paint floors, replace pool filters and install paper towel and soap dispensers in the pool restrooms.

At Riverbank Park Tonight

“Over the Hedge,” the hit animated film featuring the voices of Steve Carell, Wanda Sykes and Bruce Willis, will be shown free outdoors at Riverbank Park located in the Ironbound section of Newark to close the second year of Movies Under the Stars, a program of Branch Brook Park Alliance in partnership with Essex County. The event will take place on Friday, September 5. Festivities begin at 7:30 pm and movies begin after sundown, at approximately 8:30 pm.

Based on the United Media comic strip of the same name, “Over the Hedge” will be projected onto a large inflatable screen. Audience members are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets to sit on; pre-screening activities will include face painting, a DJ, karaoke and other festivities. Assorted snacks including popcorn will be available for purchase.

The New Jersey Ironmen are currently seeking out the first members of their newly-founded Kids Club, which was officially launched recently. As a member, young fans will enjoy benefits that will be made available exclusively to the Ironmen Kids Club. “Kids, it’s your friend, Goran Vasic, and I can’t wait to see you at the special Ironmen Kids Club events this season,” the Ironmen assist-leader stated to prospective members. “Join the club so you can join the fun!” Membership is only $29.

As a member, young fans will enjoy many exclusive perks such as a Kids Club t-shirt, membership card and a special surprise gift. Additionally, they will receive two ($20) tickets for an Ironmen game this season, a personalized card on their birthday and a weekly email from the Ironmen. Private events for the Kids Club are also in the works, and members will be invited to each occasion.

The New Jersey Ironmen Dance Team is holding auditions for their 2008-2009 squad on Monday, September 8, at Prudential Center.
