They need to bring back open ice hockey, AKA Sticks & Pucks on Saturdays and Sundays. This is the first year they don’t have open ice hockey available for EVERYONE who shows up. Talk about a slap in the face to your community.

So… are both the Police/Fire and high school stick/puck times open to everyone? It’s kind of unclear what’s going on here. Also is there a cost?

Sticks and Pucks? Where else in the country do they have free hockey for adults where you don’t even have to wear proper equipment. I’m sorry the only people who should be getting free ice time are the children.

John, what an ignorant thing to say. As if there isn’t more than enough time for everyone to play. I’ve been going to Sticks & Pucks for 20 years. Taking that away from any of us who have always gone IS indeed a slap in the face. Ironbound Rec Center still exists because of us and all the years of fighting we did for that place. I’m assuming you’re one of the youth program instructors? If so, who are you to say anything? That place is more ours than yours. You never had to deal with being exposed to deadly chemicals, pieces of the roof & ceiling falling to the ice, anti-freeze leaking all over the ice and on the players. You never had to wait outside in the freezing cold (nearly every week) because the center’s supervisors overslept or worse yet, you’ve never had to go into the ghetto (as a young, light skinned teen) to retrieve said persons because they were too hungover to wake up on their own. You never helped clean up the place, remove graffiti, coach, all for free. You didn’t spend weeks or months, year in and year out, trying to contact city officials about when the place would be safe, clean or simply open for ourselves and for our kids. We fought for years for this place only to have it completely taken from us but I won’t lie down. I agree, the kids come first but we’ve earned our time as well and I have no problem paying for it. In fact, I’d recommended years back that they begin charging simply to get things somewhat organized.

I agree with nelson i had the privelege growing up at the ironbound rec and play for the roller hockey program they had a few years back and playin on the east side hockey team from 02-06 .I dont understand why they would do this to the poeple who actually grew up playing in the rink thats why its called a recreaction so all can come in and play not for no organized youth leages thats what the new pavillion is for.I will be fighting back to the sticks and pucks back because i love the game and i cant even play it in my own home where i grew up.In 05 me and my friends went down to city hall to ask for a new zamboni and it happened so this years i will be goin their to get our ice time back.

John if you dont like it go somewhere else. You can go pay to play at all the other rinks in jersey. We need more free ice time for everyone to go play.
