Two movie posts in a row! Watch out! Did you ever hear the one about The Karate Kid? Well it’s true! The Karate Kid was filmed in the… yes, you guessed it – The Ironbound. This 80s favorite starring Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita and the unforgettable Elisabeth Shue was directed by John G. Avildsen of Rocky
fame. We’ll be honest, only the first 1:15 minutes or so are footage of the Ironbound (that we know of). Join us as we explore the Ironbound’s fascinating history of industry and ethnic succession. From the Dutch and Deutscher Ironbound of the Nineteenth Century to Italian, Polish, and Jewish turn of the Twentieth Century to the Iberian Ironbound of the present.
The tour will begin at at the former Second Dutch Reformed Church, at the intersection of Ferry and McWhorter Streets.

One of the most important factors in a person’s quality of life is their safety. While crime has dropped in the last few years, there is much to be done. Looking at the crime statistics for the 3rd precinct (the precinct that serves the Ironbound) below, some types of crimes are higher than the previous year while others have dropped. Shootings stayed the same. Murder, rape, and theft are up. Robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and auto-theft was down. A 12% decrease in crime overall.
